Thanks to Embers Cigar Lounge in Hollister, MO, we were fortunate to embark on an unforgettable journey behind the scenes of Rocky Patel Premium Cigars in El Paraiso, Honduras. The exclusive package, arranged by Embers, included everything we could dream of: three nights in a comfortable hotel, delicious meals, convenient transportation, and of course, all the rum and cigars we could handle! Our knowledgeable guide, Marisca, led us on fascinating tours of the tobacco fields, factories, and warehouses.Our adventure began in the sprawling warehouses where bales of tobacco arrive, awaiting their transformation into premium cigars. We learned about Rocky Patel's commitment to quality, with rigorous inspections at every stage of the process.Next, we explored the impressive nurseries – acres of greenhouses dedicated to nurturing the delicate tobacco seedlings. It was fascinating to see the seedlings progress through different stages of growth, from tiny sprouts to robust young plants ready for the fields. We even witnessed the unique process of "mowing" the seedlings to encourage growth before they're transplanted.The fields themselves were a sight to behold, with rows of tobacco plants stretching as far as the eye could see. Marisca explained the differences between sun-grown and shade-grown tobacco, and how the position of the leaves on the plant – Seco, Viso, and Ligero – affects their flavor. Although our visit was after the harvest, we had the opportunity to explore the "Laboratory" fields, where Rocky Patel experiments with different soil additives and seed varieties to develop unique flavor profiles.We were amazed by the curing barns, where freshly harvested leaves are carefully bundled and hung to dry in the heat and humidity. It's a meticulous process that takes around forty days, transforming the leaves into a rich, consistent brown.The heart of our journey was the Rocky Patel Premium Cigar Factory. We spent an entire day immersed in the intricate process of cigar making, witnessing the hundreds of steps and countless hours of skilled labor that go into crafting each cigar. It was inspiring to see how Rocky Patel's operation provides employment and supports the local community.Inside the factory, we followed the tobacco's journey from classification and sorting to fermentation and aging. The highlight was undoubtedly the Rolling Room, where skilled artisans hand-roll hundreds of cigars each day with incredible precision. The room was alive with energy, and we were greeted with enthusiastic cheers from the rollers.We learned about the different shaping techniques, including box-pressing, and the final quality control checks before the cigars are banded, packaged, and shipped worldwide. A visit to the Cigar Box Factory revealed the artistry involved in creating these beautiful containers, each one handcrafted with meticulous care.The culmination of our experience was a chance to create our own unique cigars! We were provided with a selection of wrappers, binders, and fillers, and guided by a skilled roller, we crafted our own personalized blends. On our last evening, we were each presented with a custom-labeled box of our creations – a truly special souvenir.Our trip to Honduras was an incredible adventure, filled with fascinating insights into the world of cigar making. We left with a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship, dedication, and passion that goes into every Rocky Patel Premium Cigar.
